Shingle water leaks tend to lead to mold growth on the underside of roof sheathing, as well as roof rafters. These leaks can be caused by water seeping in around roofing nails, or even condensation from improperly vented bathroom fans.
Stopping black and green mold growth is critical to preventing wood rot. The situation becomes more critical with TJI roof rafters and OSB roof sheathing as water incursion quickly weakens the glue in these composite materials.
